Welcome to LodgingGuide.com's lodging listings for the Charlotte area.
Charlotte was founded before the Revolutionary War by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their new city after King George's
German wife Charlotte. Surrounding Mecklenburg County also bears the name of the Queen's home town, hence Charlotte's
nickname Queen City. The new city took off upon the discovery of gold in the late 1700s, a U.S. Mint was built, but the new
cotton industry became dominant when the California gold rush took the wind out of Charlotte's brief boom. The railroads
and attendant industries followed to make Charlotte a moderately successful mid-size town. Its central location, only a
couple of hours drive from either the Blue Ridge Mountains or the Atlantic beaches, access to several interstate highways,
and mild climate have established Charlotte further as one of the best places to live in the country.
